Alberto Santos-Dumont was a Brazilian aviation pioneer who became a celebrity in turn-of-the-century Paris through a series of spectacular airship flights. His autobiography, published in 1904, recounts his early experiments, his dramatic rounding of the Eiffel Tower in Airship No. 6 to win the Deutsch Prize in 1901, and the social world of belle epoque Paris in which he moved.

Santos-Dumont's friendship with Louis Cartier is central to the origin story of the Santos wristwatch. The aviator reportedly complained that consulting a pocket watch while piloting was impractical, prompting Louis to design a wristwatch with a distinctive square bezel. The Santos remained in production for over a century.

Relevance to The Cartiers

The memoir provides first-hand context for the Paris in which Louis Cartier operated and the milieu of wealthy, adventurous clients who drove demand for new forms of timekeeping. Santos-Dumont's account of his daily life, his friendships in Parisian high society, and his obsession with practical innovation helps explain why a watchmaker and an aviator found common ground.
